Accomplishments
While far from everything the B.C. Green Caucus has accomplished in this minority government, these are some of the highlights that we have been able to get done:
Actions to protect Wild Salmon
While BC Green Caucus was successful in seeing some initial steps, the crisis facing BC's wild salmon populations, requires further action.
Basic Income
A basic income could help provide greater income security for British Columbians. Through CASA, an expert panel is now looking at how this could work for BC.
Fair Wage
Commission
BC’s Fair Wage Commission, another BC Green platform policy, helped take the politics out of increasing BC minimum wage.
Action on
Housing
The BC Green Caucus undertook extensive research and consultation to develop our housing policy priorities for input into the Budget 2018.
Ban Big Money
As the first action of the minority government, the BC Greens successfully fought to end the “Wild West” of political donations, while bringing in substantial lobbying reforms
Emerging
Economy Task Force
The emerging economy task force provided key recommendations to guide BC in developing a 21st century economy. READ REPORT
Amendments to the Residential
Tenancy Act
Bill 19 allows tenants to end a fixed-term lease if staying in their suite poses a threat to their safety or security.
CleanBC
One of the strongest climate strategies in the world on paper, Clean BC is also an economic strategy that can help make transition BC to an innovative, low carbon economy.
Money Laundering Inquiry
The BC Greens were successful in calling for full-scale public inquiry into money laundering, an investigation that is now underway.
Appointment of
Innovation Commissioner
A CASA commitment and a BC Green platform policy, BC’s Innovation Commissioner has been a key voice in helping identify and seize strategic economic opportunities in the new economy. READ REPORT
DRIPA
The introduction of Bill 41: The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People’s Act brought DRIPA into law in BC, offering a new path towards reconciliation
Universal
Childcare
A key CASA commitment, the BC Green caucus continues to push for support for Early-childhood education, and the resources to support those who work in the sector.
Background
In 2017 the BC Greens achieved a historic breakthrough, electing the first recognized Green Caucus after receiving almost 20% of the provincial vote. Shortly after the election, the BC Greens signed the historic 2017 Confidence and Supply Agreement with the BC NDP to form the province’s first minority government since 1953.
In the years since this agreement was signed, the BC Greens have seen countless priorities accomplished, including:
-
Banning of corporate and union donations and reforms to lobbying.
-
A new professional reliance regime.
-
The creation of the emerging economy taskforce.
-
Appointment of an innovation commissioner.
-
A study of Basic Income.
-
The creation of Clean BC - an economic strategy based on meeting our GHG reduction targets.
Despite the agreement which outlines the shared priorities of the two parties, the BC Greens remain an opposition party, tasked with holding the government accountable for the decision it makes.
