VICTORIA, B.C. B.C. Green Party interim leader Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich-North and the Islands and B.C. Green MLA Sonia Furstenau for Cowichan Valley issued the following joint statement for Earth Day:

"Today marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and as British Columbians continue to face uncertainty in the midst of the global pandemic, we are also reminded of how interconnected we are, how we share this Earth together and how good decision-making will give us hope for the future.

“The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. Transformative change is at the heart of the work we have undertaken since our election in 2017. From the revitalization of the Professional Reliance system and Environmental Assessment process to the passage of the Climate Change Accountability Act, we have advanced systemic solutions while advocating for the protection of wild salmon, endangered species, and vulnerable ecosystems.

“CleanBC, British Columbia's climate-economic plan, provides a blueprint for how we can begin to build a healthier, more sustainable and resilient future - a mission that is all the more pressing these days.

“Our work is inspired by the recognition that globally we need to embrace a different relationship with the planet we live on.

“Today, let us all reflect on the urgent need to improve biodiversity, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, reduce consumption, and increase sustainability and resilience. Health, both our own and that of the ecosystems around us, is a gift. Let us cherish it together."
